Private William McBurney Stockman

William McBurney Stockman was born on 14 May 1898 in 35 Collyer Street, Belfast, the second of thirteen children of smith's helper John Stockman and his wife Mary (née Kennedy). At the time of the 1911 Census he was living at 2 Ritchie Street, Belfast, with his parents, eight siblings and an uncle, and working as a flax spinner.

Stockman enlisted in the 6th (Inniskilling) Dragoons Service Squadron around January 1916 (regimental number around 325 – later Corps of Hussars No.21304).

In 1917 or 1918 he embarked for service overseas. It appears that he was one of at least a dozen men of the Inniskillings reserve squadron who were attached to the 1st King's Edward's Horse Regiment. During 1917 and 1918 this regiment served as corps cavalry in France and Italy.

On 8 March 1919 Stockman was demobilised and transferred to Class Z, Army Reserve.

By 1924 he was living at 41 Jennymount Terrace, York Road, Belfast, and working as a blacksmith. On 2 June that year he married Emily Charlton in St Anne's Church of Ireland Parish Church. Some years later they emigrated to Canada, and then the United States.
